The pediatrician that saw Warner while we were in the hospital after delivery has 7 children. Yes, you heard me right 7 children! He told us that he and his wife didn’t follow any sort of schedule with their first baby and none of them got any rest. It was just miserable. Their baby didn’t sleep through the night until they were around a year old. With the next 6 babies they used the book ‘Baby Wise’ to sleep train and they were sleeping through the night at 7 weeks old. He HIGHLY recommended that we read it too. So that’s what we did and Warner was sleeping through the night at 7 weeks! Now I do have a confession: Ethan did almost all of the reading and figured out the scheduling and then just told me all about it. While this book is awesome it does read a bit like a text book, and my attention span is that of about a squirrel when it comes to text books. With that said I’m gonna turn most of this post over to Ethan so he can explain why this book is so awesome and how you can get your baby to sleep through the night too!
I greatly value 8 hours of sleep, and everyone had me convinced that I was destined to never have a restful night’s sleep again after having a baby. However, when the pediatrician told me that he was able to get all of his kids to sleep through the night, I quickly purchased this on Amazon Prime and it was on the doorstep before we even got home from the hospital. Thanks Amazon! The book has a lot of advice to new parents about various topics, but I was only concerned with the information about getting Warner to sleep through the night.
The authors believe that it is possible to get any baby to sleep through the night by as early as 7 to 10 weeks of age. They say that the key to getting your baby to sleep through the night is by putting them on a regular eating schedule so that they will have a full belly once night time rolls around. The suggested schedules revolve around an “eat-wake-sleep” cycle. The idea is that you feed your baby a “full feeding” at the same exact times every single day. A full feeding consists of 15-30 minutes of continuous eating (if breast feeding). They also give advice on how to bottle feed, but we only focused in on the breast feeding portion because Brianna was exclusively nursing at the time. The feeding method they used is called Parent Directed Feeding. I believe that is a good term for it because Warner rarely had to let us know he was hungry before we directed his feeding. This works nicely because we can plan outings around his schedule, and he generally doesn’t get fussy. One important thing the author does make clear is that you should always feed a hungry baby, even if it is outside of the scheduled time. Do not stick to the schedule at the expense of your hungry baby. Just keep working on getting those full feedings at the next scheduled times.
Lastly, have you ever heard of the rule: never wake a sleeping baby? Well, you will be breaking that rule a lot with this schedule! In order to give your baby a full feeding at the same time every day, you will need to wake them up from their naps. This proved to be quite the battle for us at first. Warner would often just want to sleep when we were trying to get him to eat. We would strive to get him to a full feeding in that time window by repeatedly “fake-changing” his diaper to wake him up. It does sound a little cruel, but it was extremely effective. Warner was sleeping 7 hours a night by 7 weeks old, and has been sleeping for 11 hours solid for the past few months. I fully believe that getting him on a rigid feeding schedule at an early age helped him to sleep through the night. I look forward to doing this method with our future children to see if it is indeed repeatable! I highly recommend you buy this book, to see the week by week detailed scheduling.
